Jennifer Slager – Sofa Final

16 12 2008

My thought behind the design of the Line Sofa Collection was to create something that was elegant and sleak while not becoming too traditional.  My designs are based on the line and its vertical or horizontal orientation in space.

Below is my final power point presentation…

Ashley Hughes Sofa Materials

16 12 2008

scan4001I choose my fabric from a company called Stickley. The color is a light spring green that gives the sofa a fresh look!

Fabric # 7237-41 Grade E

Grade E for this company is average price wise and quality..if anything it is leaning more towards the higher end set of fabrics

It is 26% pollyester–74% rayon

The sofa has 3 seperate cushions ( Not a tight back) and is 74″ wide.

Therefore the price of the fabric comes out to be $102.00 per yard.

For this sofa we will need at least 6 yards..( purchasing an extra yard of fabric always comes in handy)

I went to Toms-Price for a qoute on how much this would cost :  $102 minus 25% comes to $459.00 divided by 6 yards = $77.00  each yard

For the sofa wood and finish I decided to go with a Teak wood. I went to Chicago’s Premier Hardwood Source called Wood World and looked at imported teak wood for my sofa. Since wood is my main focal finish in my project I wanted a wood type that was perfect for the piece. I like the way the end grain and top grain give a texture to the flat wood.

Teak lumber has the rich color, tight grain, and resolute hardness only found in centuries-old teak. Age and environment have seasoned this wood into an incredible swirl of mellow browns, tans and silvers. This wood begs to be touched. Plantation grown wood simply cannot compare.

Cleaning and Maintenance For Teak Wood!

Treating teak with oils or other preservatives is not necessary for protection, and will not extend the life of your furniture. However, if you prefer to keep your teak furniture at its original golden color — instead of letting it weather to a silvery-gray patina — our Teak Maintenance Products can help maintain the wood’s hue:

  • For stained or dirty teak, Frontgate’s Teak Cleaner is a strong solution that removes all accumulated dirt and grease from the wood’s surface.
  • Often used in conjunction with the cleaner solution, our Teak Protector penetrates deep into the timber, dissolving away any remaining grease and dirt. The bleaching action of the brightener also restores some of the original natural surface color of the timber.
Care of Teak

Teak does not require any special maintenance other than an occasional cleaning. If left to age naturally outdoors, the surface of the wood will gradually change to a soft silvery-grey as the pigments fade. We recommend that you maintain the silver patina with regular, gentle cleaning with soft-soap flakes dissolved in warm water (not detergent).

Be sure to use a non-abrasive brush or sponge when cleaning, and avoid using steel wool or wire brushes. When finished, rinse the entire piece of furniture with low-pressure water to remove any dirt or remaining solution.

Characteristics of Teak Wood

Teak is regarded as one of the most beautiful, high-quality woods manufactured today. It’s a very dense, straight-grained hardwood with a coarse texture, high natural oil content, and a distinctively aromatic scent (often compared to leather).

Widely renowned for its durability and resistance to rotting, teak is almost impervious to the effects of sun, rain, frost, and snow. Its high level of resinous oil acts as a natural insect repellent, giving it a very high resistance to termites. Due to its hard-wearing nature, teak has been the timber of choice in shipbuilding for hundreds of years.

It is also a popular material for outdoor furnishings. Many other hardwoods are often marketed as “teak substitutes”, but no other material performs to the same standards as genuine teak.

Another popular trait of teak wood is its weathering tendency. Over time, teak furniture will attain a handsome silvery-gray patina. This process takes approximately nine months, depending on the amount of sunlight and rain exposure. During weathering, a slight lifting of the grain may occur on the tops of the arms and legs, and you may even see a few cracks. This is not considered a defect, but a natural expanding and contracting of the wood. The grain will return to its original smooth finish after the weathering process is complete.

Care of Danish Teak FurnitureDanish modern furniture that was manufactured in the mid 20th century had the advantage of being constructed of the best woods from old, slow growth trees. The designs were done typically in teak, oak, beech, and rosewood. With a minimum of effort and care, vintage danish modern furniture can still satisfy daily functional needs and retain it’s beauty for generations.

Care for this type of furniture is very easy. Teak wood most often was not lacquered. Only an oil was used. To preserve this finish the owner simply needs to apply teak oil occasionally, in conjunction with routine dusting or whenever the wood appears dry. Other oils such as lemon oil or mineral oil may be used as well but might require a little more rubbing to encourage the oil to be absorbed into the wood. These oils provide resistance to stains, and highlight the wood’s natural luster. The same treatment can apply to other types of woods that are not laquered, however the oil will somewhat darken the lighter colored woods such as oak and beech.

If a stain does appear on an oiled piece of furniture it can usually be removed by using an oil soap such as “Murphy’s”, and scrubbing the surface with an ordinary scouring pad like “Scotch Brite” or a finer steel wool. Rinse off the washed area and let it dry. Then apply the oil a few times until the wood regains it’s glow.

Danish Furniture Restoration - Modern FurnitureRosewood was usually lacquered. This type of finish on rosewood or any other wood can be maintained with ordinary furniture wax or polish. Once in a while a rosewood piece is found without a lacquered finish, in which case it can be cleaned and oiled as previously described.

Traditionally, oak furniture from Denmark has a “soap” finish or is left in its untreated, raw state. Oak pieces can be cleaned by washing with an oil soap or by lightly sanding the wood (see below). The soap finish is applied by making a slurry with water and white soap flakes and rubbing it into the wood. After it dries it is polished with a soft cloth. This same treatment can be done to beech and ash as well and provides good resistance to stains in ordinary use.

In the case of veneers, be careful not to sand through . The veneers used to produce the vintage furniture however, were much thicker than is used today, so there is a bit more forgiveness when it comes to sanding. We always recommend trying first to remove any stain by washing, then if necessary, lightly sanding it.

I wanted to make a sofa that had a modern feel but also decorative elements, so i made the arms the decorative peice of this sofa.  I also wanted something comfortable so the depth of the cushions are going to be oversized and I would like to use metal for the legs.

Week 14: Final Project – The Duncan Loveseat

Here is a rendered view of my final product.  I am calling the loveseat The Duncan Loveseat after my grandmother’s maiden name, because her chair was the inspiration for the loveseat.  It is suppose to be a rather structured and formal loveseat with horizontal/clean lines and a retro feel.  It has a firm but comfortable seat and is perfect for any sitting area.  I used the blue chenille quilted cloth to give the structured lines of the loveseat a softer more inviting feel.  I really enjoyed this project and hope you enjoy seeing the process!  And Happy Holidays to everyone!

The “Chloe” Sofa by Jahaila Sing

14 12 2008

The Chloe Sofa

couchinhotellobby2

preliminary-sketches1The Chloe Sofa”, is a continuation of my experiment in modern curved pieces of furniture as expressed in my last entry, the entertainment unit. I was interested in seeing what might happen when using the same concept of curved lines and creating a somewhat module form now functional for a person or two to sit within. “Sitting within” is really what I wanted to create for the person to experience. A sort of inclosed atmosphere within the sofa. Instead of sitting just on the sofa you are now sitting within it. Feeling enveloped in the warm rich walnut and cushioned by velvet. This feeling or atmosphere I wanted to create really gave me a chance to exaggerate the back of the sofa, creating a cocoon or “private” place to sit back into. The tufted back cushions add softness and high visual contrast to the dark wood. A bolster on each side add a finished touch. The soft cushions are finished with cording in the same rich velvet upholstery.

My intent was to design a piece that would be used in a formal setting and have a strong presence. A piece that was not just functional but also sculptural.

Ashley Hughes Final Sketch of Sofa

12 12 2008

Here is my final idea of my sofa….I think it worked out just the way I wanted it to.

The arms, legs, and camel back are made of wood and only the arm side cushions and seat cushions are fabric.

The arm side cushions are used as arm rests that hang over the wooden arm.

The side view has an angle feel to it and it is very open. I want this sofa to look fresh and clean that is modern but yet small simple details in the frame that give it a tradional, comfortable feel.

View this galley of my sofa for a better look!

Will be adding Cad drawings very soon!!!! ;)

0011

This was my very first sketch.  I actually created this the day we were told to about this competition.

002

This piece was inspired by my A/V cabinet.  I wanted to play with curves and swirls, push the boundaries a little more.  The details would be key for this sofa.

004

I wanted to create something unique and new, something the world have never seen before.  I love the sculptural aspect of this sofa.  005

This piece was inpsired by the mid-20th century.   I wanted to play with the scale and proportions with this sofa.

006

I wanted to move into a different direction, create something very different than the rest of my sketches.  This is only half of the “full sofa”, making it easy to move and assemble.

cachet20fusion20loveseat003

I love the shape of this piece, it was inpsired by Perlora’s cachet fushion love seat.  This is the sofa I am going to continue with.

The first picture, I like the unusal back of the sofa, almost heart shaped back with the metal legs.

The second picture, I like that the back of the sofa to the seat is separte giving it a unique detail to the sofa.

The third picture, I like the tuffing detail on the back of the sofa.

The fourth picture, I like the legs with the ‘X’ form which was used on my av cabinet, so I might incorporate it into my sofa.

The fifth picture, I like the high back with the curved arms.

The final picture, I like the clean lines but with the slight curve on the arms.

I am very inspired by the modular shape and function within all the furniture collections.  Furniture needs to be flexible in order to fit into different spaces.  I want my piece to be visually appealing with the use or printed fabrics and a variety of materials.  A sofa should be inviting, and easy to curl up in.  A variety of sizes in seating depth would accomodate all heights and make the sofa warm and inviting for everyone.  The goal is to be as functional as possible so I would like to incorporate storage into my piece as well.

About the Unit

This av. unit is intended to be a floor to ceiling unit that can act as a divider between two spaces, for example between a bedroom and living room in a studio apartment, or between a dinning and living room area. It is intended to make the most of one television enabling the owner to simply swivel the television around to the other side if moving to the other room.

The unit also acts as a storage unit for many miscellaneous things, with a variety of cabinet sizes to fit any need. It is viewable from all sides and can come in a variety of options. The unit shown can be separated into 5 separate pieces, the bottom and top cabinets, the ceiling television mount, and the two side cabinet pieces. This allows the unit to be more easily transportable and also give the consumer options to how they want the cabinet set up. For example they could choose to simply not have one of the side cabinets and that would make the rotating of the television even easier and give a more open feel.

Sara Fisher – Final Entry – Hi Fidelity

27 10 2008

My final concept is to be called Hi Fidelity because of the 1950’s Inspiration.  It is low horizontal piece with a center cabinet for AV equipment and open storage on the side. There is no hardware on the cabinet doors, it is a touch and open hinge.  I used Lyptus a fast regenerating wood and MDF to construct the piece.  In my rendering I showed the piece in a warm cherry stain, but stain can be optional.  I really had a lot of fun creating this piece as well as seeing what others have created.  I look forward to the next step creating a sofa!
